Jonathan had really inspiring words about his upbringing and how to persevere. He kept the environment feeling light and humorous and he’s a fellow nu yorka so +300 aura.

This conference is truly incredible. Last year, we were one of only three high schools attending, and this year, we’re the only high school here. I was initially concerned that my students might feel out of place, but the response has been overwhelmingly positive. While some have expressed surprise, and even questioned why we’re here since the event is typically for higher education students, the warmth and acceptance from others has been inspiring. My students come from a reservation in North Dakota, a community that faces significant barriers and is highly underrepresented in higher education. For many of them, this is their first time leaving the reservation, and these opportunities are life-changing. Indigenous people make up just 1% of the college population, so any chance to expose my students to higher education is invaluable. I’m deeply grateful to the NCSL coordinators for creating such a welcoming environment, where my students can develop leadership skills and start building meaningful networks. They are representing Indigenous youth with pride, and this experience will have a lasting impact on their futures.
