IMA JUST DO IT!! (Lessons from Costa Rica)

“I do it! Ima just do it! No hesitation, with no time to waste/ And I promise, I promise that Ima just do it!” – KB

Charting at #3 on iTunes, “Tomorrow We Live” by KB.

Back in August, a squad of us departed to Costa Rica on a trip to help build up the country and leave it better than we found it for our week stay. We were cruising around the mountainous land of Costa Rica in a stick-shift, real life version of the Scooby Van and were bumping to a popular recently released album, “Tomorrow We Live,” by KB.

On the first day of our riding around and doing missionary work, our theme song for the entire trip instantaneously became “Ima Just Do It” in which KB and Bubba Watson (Yes, the professional golfer) rap about not wasting time and just do what you know you need to do to get to where you want to be!

“I see what you’re doing and that don’t excite me/ Get out of the way, I’m not asking politely/ I’m so filiated, I’m so filiated they know who the squad be (116)/ We do what we want, they too scared to try, so Ima just do it!”

The song turned anthem became the driving force behind everything we did in Costa Rica! “You want to share solid values at schools to youth who run rampant lives? Just do it! You want to donate your newest clothe to people in necessity? Just do it! You want to help install light and cement the outside of a beaten up church?? Just Do It!!”

On that trip, there was nothing stopping us from getting our goals accomplished. We saw people raise smiles on their faces when prior to us arriving, they were beaten up. We saw children and teenagers animated and life-filled with our role play and skits. We saw a 30 year old pastor and wife cry on our shoulders with tears of joy and gratefulness because we said “IMA JUST DO IT!”

Looking into my life and seeing the serious situations I’ve experienced, I’ve had to struggle, but I’ve also had to DO, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” – James 1:22

When I took out loans my first two years of college because my parents owned our home and that was considered an “investment” (even though foreclosure threatened several times), I busted myself to get good grades, write my essays and get my reference letters so I can get scholarships for the rest of my college career (which I did).

When I worked concierge and the biggest snow storm of 2012 hit, I was excused for an event that got cancelled because of the storm, but called back in for work with no transportation and was most likely going to have to sleep on the floor. My boss needed me to work a shift immediately afterwards to cover someone and if I worked even 5 minutes of that 8 hour shift, I’d get paid the whole day if the person arrived. Guess who got a days work in 5 minutes??

When I was getting involved on campus and ran for the Board of Trustees position and Internal Affairs and lost both times by one vote, I ran again for Executive VP without contention and served a term of experience that helped land me my current job, as well as getting me into NYU.

I hear people throw out cliches like “if it’s for you it’s for you” or “if it’s meant to be, it’ll happen.” The one that grinds me most is “if it’s God’s will.” Many times people live passive, selective lives not realizing that God WANTS to include you in the decision making and unraveling of your own life! Quit living weak, fearful and intimidated lifestyles and embrace the challenges of life! They are fun once you get your footing!
