“Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” – Matthew 27:4
As I reflected on this verse I could only think, “what if you were Lebron James, but everyone who does not play for the NBA keeps yelling ‘you suck?'” Would you be annoyed? I would probably ask a few of them to ball up, snap a few ankles and proceed forward with my career… but not Jesus.
Prior to the commencement of humanity’s most inhumane torture, Jesus knew who He was. He knew He would be the Lebron James of that time and the Michael Jordan of HISTORY! Jesus knew He was capable of removing Himself from that cross, but didn’t….. Why? … Because He knew that in order for us to experience hope, this would be the most potent way.
Sometimes in life, we, like Jesus, experience “similar” forms of crucifixion, and some instances are more bloody than others.. Some leave more scars than others and some deeper wounds than others, but when these moments arrive, do you crave to get off that cross or do you desire for the work to be done?
One of the New Testament authors, James, writes to go through our trials with joy and “Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” – James 1:4
When you experience trials of ANY KIND, it is important to always remember that God’s plans, as much as we don’t want to hear it, goes beyond us…
It is not about us and never will be. Our situations are not only so we can be like a baseball glove, broken in, but to benefit others who were most likely not capable of enduring what you went through. When I ruminate on those terms, it is humbling that God sees me worthy of the assignment to provide alleviation to somebody else’s life!
